The Chinese manufacturer Xpeng unveils new fast charging stations that can reach a maximum power of 480 kW. Almost twice as powerful as Tesla Superchargers!
It is now increasingly easy to quickly recharge your electric car. And for good reason, the players in this industry are actively working on the development of innovative solutions and even more efficient terminals. But if Tesla had a certain lead until now, now the young Chinese brand Xpeng is determined not to let it go..
A great power, but not a first
Indeed, the firm has just lifted the veil on a new charging solution, on the occasion of its “Supercharging Media Day” event this Monday, August 15. On this day, Xpeng has formalized its S4 terminals, which have the particularity of delivering a power of 480 kW with 670 A for cars with an 800 volt architecture. Suffice to say that this is a great step forward in the field, while the Ionity and Fastned terminals currently cap at 350 kW at 800 volts with a maximum of 500 A. The Chinese manufacturer also gives a beating to Tesla, whose Superchargers display only 250 kW on 400 volt architectures. Even if their power could increase to 350 kW in their V4 version.
Today, we held our Supercharging Media Day in Guangzhou, which included a speech from He Xiaopeng.

Nevertheless, this prowess must be measured. And for good reason, Xpeng is not the first brand to offer such high power. Rival GAC also launched 480kW stations last year and now plans to offer a charging solution of up to 600kW in the future. For its part, Nio revealed last July terminals that can reach 500 kW, allowing a car to be charged in just 10 minutes.
200 kilometers in just two minutes
According to the brand’s press release, the first S4 terminal is already functional and is installed at the Sunac Mall in Guangzhou, in the 1,000th charging station established by the manufacturer in China. A first test was carried out with the new Xpeng G9, which can then recover 200 km of range on the CLTC cycle in just five minutes with this type of charger. As a reminder, this one is equipped with a 96 kWh battery and operates with an 800-volt architecture, like the Porsche Taycan, Hyundai Ioniq 5 and other Kia EV6. Rival of the Tesla Model Y and the Nio ES6, it claims an output of 543 horsepower for a maximum torque of 717 Nm.
Over the next few months, Xpeng plans to install S4 terminals in no less than ten stations spread across major cities in China, including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen. By 2025, the brand plans to open no less than 200 fast charging stations across the country. On the other hand, it has not yet announced anything for Europe, while it is already marketed in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands and surely soon in France.
