The new Pixel 6a is (already) the victim of a big security problem

Barely released, the new Google phone already has a big security concern: its fingerprint sensor does not work.

The launch of a smartphone is always a special moment for a brand, especially when, like Apple or Google, you only offer one or two models per year. It is therefore necessary to take care of the smallest details and to have tested all the potential errors so that the latter are already a distant memory when the phone is shipped for the first time.

But some launches feel more like a nightmare than a fairy tale. This is particularly the case with the debut of Google’s Pixel 6a, the affordable version of its Pixel 6 released at the end of last year. According to two reports that come to us from India, the phone suffers from a serious security flaw.

A software flaw still not fixed

According to many owners, all fingerprints would be able to unlock the phone, making it vulnerable. This flaw is believed to be caused by a software glitch within the phone’s operating system, and although they haven’t officially confirmed it, Google is reportedly already investigating this major issue.

Reassuring point for Google, not all phones are affected by this problem. Which reinforces the idea that it is probably a software problem. But the concern is not to be taken lightly. Indeed, the Google phone has been launched in 13 countries, and there are already 7 incident reports that have accumulated on the brand’s complaints offices.

An update should arrive over the weekend, it has already proven itself in Japan and it will be launched in the coming days in all countries where the Pixel 6a is on sale. For the moment the best thing to do is to deactivate the screen unlock with the fingerprint. The phone will automatically ask for the secret code to open and this solution has no security flaws.

Google and the Pixel: already 7 years of history

As a reminder, Google entered the smartphone market after years of waiting and hesitation. The brand, founded by Larry Page and Sergei Brin, offered the “Pixel” to the public in 2015. Very quickly, the phone stood out for its high photo quality and its very pure OS, which did not use any Android overlay.

In 2021, Google marketed the Pixel 6 which was a real success. With software solutions like the “magic eraser” to erase unwanted parts of photos, the phone has come into the race for “smartphone of the year” alongside the latest iPhone and Galaxy S.

With the Pixel 6a, Google offers a much more affordable version of its flagship phone. Today the Pixel 6a is available for €459.
