A 22-year-old man infected with monkeypox has died in India, the country’s authorities announced on Monday.
A fourth death outside Africa linked to monkeypox was announced on Monday. As AFP reports, Indian authorities said on Monday that a 22-year-old man infected with the monkeypox virus died on July 30. This is the first virus-related death in Asia.

The man reportedly recently returned from a stay in the United Arab Emirates after which he was hospitalized. While his contamination with monkeypox has been confirmed, it is not yet clear whether the virus was the cause of death.

This announcement comes as Spain informed of two deaths linked to this disease last week. A victim of the virus was also identified in Brazil on Friday.
On July 23, the WHO (World Health Organization) designated monkeypox as an international health emergency after the further increase in confirmed cases and transmission in more than 75 countries.
Also according to the WHO, more than 18,000 cases of the monkeypox virus have been recorded worldwide since the beginning of May outside of Africa, where the virus is endemic. A large proportion of these cases have been recorded in Europe.
