Elon Musk asks Tesla employees to stop working from home or quit

In emails that have been made public, the boss of Tesla announces that he wants all employees to return to work in the premises where they will be fired.

Many companies around the world, including Tesla, allowed remote working for positions that allowed it when the COVID-19 pandemic began in 2020. And, while the latter now seems to be fading, many between them have meanwhile reassessed their rules in the field, coming to the conclusion that their employees are just as productive, if not more, working from home and have authorized this to be maintained. Others, on the other hand, encourage their staff to return to the office.

In the case of Tesla, we fall into the second category and the word “incite” is even weak, as we could discover in the leak of a series of emails sent by Elon Musk with his usual direct style easily recognizable. Here is the first:

Subject: Telecommuting is no longer accepted

Anyone wishing to work from home must also be in the office at least (and I mean “at least”) 40 hours a week or leave Tesla. That’s less than what we ask of factory workers.

If this is impossible for some particularly exceptional contributors, I will review their case directly.

Also, the “office” must be Tesla’s, not some distant branch without

Thanks,
Elon

Then the second, in case the first wasn’t “super clear”:

Subject: To be super clear

Everyone at Tesla must work a minimum of 40 hours in the office each week. Also, the office should be where your colleagues are located, not some distant pseudo-workstation. If you don’t come, we’ll assume you quit.

The higher your position, the more visible your presence should be. That’s why I spend so much time at the factory, so that those on the assembly lines can see me working alongside them. If I hadn’t done that, Tesla would have gone bankrupt a long time ago.

There are of course companies that don’t have these requirements, but when hasn’t they launched a remarkable new product? Since a long time.

Tesla has created and always will create the most exciting and useful products of any other company on Earth. It won’t happen by spending time on the phone.

Thanks,
Elon

Elon Musk did not respond to press enquiries, but took to his favorite social network, Twitter, to answer the question “what to say to people who think coming to work is a thing of the past. ? Asked by one of its subscribers, with the answer: “They should pretend to work elsewhere”.
