Svolt neighbor of Tesla in Germany
Chinese battery maker Svolt has unveiled plans to build a cell assembly plant in Germany to supply electric vehicles, choosing the state of Brandenburg – which is also home to Tesla’s gigafactory – as the location. “Svolt is responding to this market dynamic with steady expansion by building additional local capacity,” the company said. Svolt has taken over the Lauchhammer site, including buildings and infrastructure, from Vestas, a wind turbine manufacturer , last August.
Start of production in 2025
The planned site in Lauchhammer would have a capacity of 16 gigawatt hours per year and would begin production in 2025, said a spokesperson for the company, which is a spin-off from Chinese automaker Great Wall Motors.
“The switch to electromobility, but also government decisions, are driving demand for electric vehicles,” said Svolt CEO Hongxin Yang.
Second factory in Germany
In 2020, Svolt announced investments of up to 2 billion euros to build a cell production plant as well as a module and pack plant in southwestern Germany, more precisely in the Land of Saarland , with a planned production capacity of 24 GWh. The factory will supply EV batteries to Stellantis.
